In this review, I will discuss the V-Maxx aftermarket coilover suspension
kit as well as some tips that can help you during the installation. Many enthusiasts
will note the noticeable wheelgap found on MK4s (and most other VWs). In general,
coilovers will provide a much stiffer setup as well as less body roll when compared
to stock, however, you should know that they alter the suspension geometry.
Revised spindles, such as H2sports
will fix the geometry & are highly recommended. I decided to go with V-Maxx
Autosport's (aka Hiltrac)
MK4 suspension kit in hopes of defeating the stock "4x4" mode (excessive
wheelgap). This kit is exclusively sold by Stratmosphere
at a fair price of $599 and allows you to lower your car anywhere between 35
mm (1.4 in) to 65 mm (2.6 in). They are backed by a 2 year warranty and a 7
year TUV certification.
VMAXX Autosport
MKIV Coilover Kit

Tools needed:
- Jack (hopefully not the factory widowmaker!) & 2 or
4 jackstands (or a lift if you're lucky!)
- 2 spring compressors (can rent them at places like Autozone)
- 16mm (5/8") socket
- 17mm (11/16") socket
- 18mm (23/32") socket
- VW Special Tool #3424 ("strut spreader" found here)
OR you can make your own
** I used a flathead screwdriver and a mallet - it took time but
it worked
- Top strut nut tool (found
here and here)
OR an impact tool OR a 60 degree 21mm offset wrench**I used a generic MacPherson strut nut removal kit from Matco
- T-20 Torx screwdriver (if you have an older MK4 that has fender lining
where the rear struts are mounted)
- Anti-seize / corrosion lubricant
